Universal design leaders win ACSA Awards

March 17, 2003 -- Elaine Ostroff, founder of Adaptive Environments, and Dr. Edward Steinfeld, founding director of the Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access (IDEA), were honored Saturday by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture at its annual meeting.

Elaine Ostroff, honored with the Association's Honorary Award, founded Adaptive Environments in 1977; in its 25 years, the organization has become an authority on universal design by promoting accessiblity for all people "as a key to social equity," says its director Valerie Fletcher. Ostroff created the Universal Design Education Project, a national faculty development project for post-secondary architecture educators; helped develop the Community Access Monitoring Project with the Massachusetts Office on Disability in 1985, and organized the first Fair Housing Leadership training with the Center for Universal Design in 1989. Her many publications include the by-now classic Universal Design Handbook and the 2002 Building a World Fit for People: Designers with Disabilities At Work. She can be reached at elaine@ostroff.org

Edward Steinfeld, Arch. D., received the Association's Distinguished Professor Award. Steinfeld is Professor of Architecture at the School of Architecture and Planning at the University at Buffalo. Dr Steinfeld is an expert in accessible design, universal design, human factors research, aging, home modifications, architectural design, and product research. He has conducted research on accessibility and universal design in housing, usability of automobiles for frail older people, methods for measuring the usability of products and environments and the development of a prototype "Universal Bathroom." A frequent expert consultant on ADA compliance and building safety, he collaborated with Ostroff on the Universal Design Handbook .
